Do you have a grounding practice?

I can’t tell you how often I ask my clients this question.

Many people, myself included, get so caught up in our minds that we forget to connect to our own bodies. The subconscious programming is real y’all, and fighting that default behavior to intellectualize literally EVERYTHING is where we are going wrong as a collective. Hell, as a species!

Let me explain: I’ve been doing energy work for 5 years now and the throughline with my clients, and even early on in my healing journey, is that we are so disconnected from ourselves, our people and our planet that we try everything but the simplest remedy to feel better. We try to troubleshoot the pros and cons of a situation when our heads are spinning from data analysis. We tell ourselves that making decisions from an emotional space vs an intellectual one is bad (thank you patriarchy for that one!) and worst of all, when our bodies are sending us signals because our minds are not listening, we can end up with chronic pain, autoimmune diseases and more.

Let me throw in this disclaimer that not all ailments are caused by disruptions in your energy field and therefore not all ailments can be healed by energy alone. A holistic approach incorporating different healing modalities and remedies is key. But 9/10 times I speak with someone about what ails them, the emotional trauma that they experienced coincides with said pain. For example, someone who is a birthworker is likely to have pain/disruption/misalignment etc in the hips if they are not properly and effectively processing and releasing the energy they take on during birth work. Or someone who is in a high position at work and at home, making countless decisions daily, processing excessive amounts of information may have chronic headaches, migraines and vision issues. See the connection?

That being said, a grounding practice is KEY FOR THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF ALL HUMANITY. (sorry for screaming) But think/feel/intuit about it. We are all living beings on Earth. The Earth is our proverbial mother. She carries us. We are made of the same elements as she is. She feeds us, nourishes us physically, as well as provides stimulation for the 5 senses so that we can flourish. And yet, when we are feeling low, unmotivated, burnt out, what is most likely your go-to activity to make you feel better? I bet it’s not grounding! It’s eating comfort(junk) food, binge watching reality TV to escape, calling a friend to talk shit AKA vent, and then it is hiking, visiting loved ones who lift us up, or taking a mental health day to process and integrate recent impactful experiences.

We are so collectively disconnected from our bodies and the planet, that THAT is the ailment. Not being grounded is the sickness. And so many people are not self aware enough to realize this.

So how do we fix this? (pause while I climb down from my soap box) Here is a list of activities anyone can do at any time for any amount of time to recalibrate their energy so they are once again aligned with the Earth and therefore on the track to healing, balance and wholeness:

  1. Meditate and breathe. Sit quietly. Accept that you will have thoughts. That is the nature of the mind. The task is to sit still, focus on the breath, and just be. You will know it is working when you stop trying to reach for your phone or write down a to-do list. You can use meditation apps, sound healing, guided meditations, or go outside and listen to the wind in the trees.

  2. Hydrate! Pay attention to what you put in your body and when. Are you drinking enough water? Are you getting enough minerals from your food? Are you taking vitamin D supplements because you work in a cubicle 40 hours a week? Are you fasting on accident or on purpose?

  3. Journal. If you suffer from “monkey mind” (I always picture a bunch of monkeys jumping on a bed like the nursery rhyme) get those repetitive thoughts out of your physical body by writing them down. No need to keep the pages if you don’t like what you wrote. Burning it is an even better remedy.

  4. Get in your body. Dance. Run. Jump. Stretch. Stomp. Do yoga. Do something that is just challenging enough or activating enough that the mind has nothing else to do but to focus on the actions of the body. Learn some choreo, take an advanced yoga class. Anything that gets your body dialed in on breath and movement, not mulling over if you offended someone the other day because of the way you greeted them.

  5. Go stand outside. Barefoot. Under a tree, full sun or the night sky. Bonus points if you aren’t holding your phone. Why? So that the electrons from the Earth neutralize the free radicals in your body, creating a sense of calm. Barefoot grounding/earthing also improve sleep and works as an anti-inflammatory.

  6. Seek outside expertise. There are countless reiki practitioners, healers, witches, etc. who can help you jumpstart your healing process so that you can get a leg up and flow into maintenance from there, instead of digging yourself out of a hole.

Remember; Everybody is different. So do what you need to do to get your needs met. And know that your needs may change over time. So stay present, phone a friend (or an expert) and bring all that energy that is being expended in the mind, back into the body for healing, restoration and vitality.

Stay grounded my friends.
